The Year of the Hydralisk - The Highlights

2009 was the greatest year for Starcraft ever, but I think that we really should be saying is that 2009 was the greatest year for Starcraft so far. The future is most exciting, and I predict that the new decade will be all the more awesome. But first, let’s look back at some of the absolute highlights of 2009.

I am Sebastian Sjoberg, owner of polygonrevue.com, and I feel very privileged to be posting here at StarcraftMethod.com. Lots of unique content is coming in the near future, but with this first post I would like to share some of the most popular and entertaining highligths of the past year.

First of all, let’s kick back and enjoy watching the masters do their work like only the can. 2009 saw the ancient legends of Starcraft progaming return to battle on stage once more, in both the Heritage League and the International eSports Festival.

SlayerS_`Boxer` impressed us like only the Emperor can, and especially so when he stood against his old rival [NC]YellOw, the King of Silver since the early days of Starcraft. sAviOr may not have beaten everyone in 2009 but he fought hard and well and brought us all a taste of the old Maestro. NaDa, Reach, Nal_rA, Kingdom and other ancient greats showed us why this game is the best in the world and nothing less.

Apart from all the exceedingly epic action from the regular leagues of Starcraft, such as Jaedong winning a Golden Mouse and SK Telecom1 claiming victory in the Proleague on the beach in Pusan, we enjoyed an international feast of progaming in the World Cyber Games 2009. Stork faced Jaedong in the finals and it was as great as always, but the best games were those that we did not expect much of but got plenty from. Ukrainian player DIMAGA took a game of the Zerg master, young German player Kolll carved his way through a great many opponents only to face Bisu in the battle for third place – who very nearly lost earlier to the Chinese Protoss-menace PJ. It bodes well for the future, and You can watch all casted games here:

StarcraftMethod.com has been providing great coverage of the scene throughout last year, and I will not re-iterate what has already been done in great detail at this site. More top quality Starcraft happens every week than what most us have the chance to watch, so let me round off by offering some alternative content.

The community that we are all apart of is both wide and deep, and these days there are even some that make a living out of the game – as active players and commentators. Polygonrevue.com has had the honor of speaking to some of these ‘Starcraft celebrities’ and hearing what they have to say. Here’s a list of the most popular interviews:

Nick ‘Tasteless’ Plott – the BallerToss himself, who is living the eSports dream in South Korea as a caster of professional Starcraft. The man has a lot to say, and he says it well

Sean ‘Day9‘ Plott – the foremost ‘Starcraft scholar’ in the foreign world and veteran Zerg player, and younger brother to Nick. What he does not know about the game is not worth knowing

Geoff ‘iNcontrol’ Robinson – as a sponsored progamer and weightlifter, this American Zerg player takes competition seriously and has got his mind locked on winning the TSL Season 2

Dan ‘Nyoken’ Eidson – an old school Terran player with a sense for micro and a veteran in the community, he’s also got his mind on the TSL prize. Among many other things, Nyoken tells us in this interview how ret is doing in Korea and how to beat the unstoppable mechanic monster that is Idra
